01.jpg "Replicating Success" is an interactive forum. Every user is invited to contribute with comments and practical experiences to develop a prototype for replicable community based conservation and development projects.

There are many good practices of conservation and development throughout the world, which have successfully dealt with poverty, population growth and environmental degradation. But often these good practices are neither known to outsiders nor replicated by other organizations. Therefore, in a time of limited funding and diverse unmet needs in many less developed countries, it is a big challenge to find out what works and scale it up. There is an urgent need for cost effective and efficient development programs.

"Replicating Success" analyzes a successful integrated development and conservation project implemented by a well known NGO in Nepal. It is strictly community based, and involves the local rural population in all steps of implementation from planning to cost sharing. A detailed description of the project on which this study is based can be found at ACAP Project Description. Targets and Principles introduce you to the overall idea and philosophy of the project which aims at improving living conditions in rural communities.

The button Examples shows all different aspects analysed in the study. It explains the key requirements like infrastructure, manpower and financial needs and gives advice how to prepare for implementation. It also analyses all strengths and weaknesses of the components and shows where and how they already have been replicated successfully in other projects in different environments. That makes this study a guideline for replication.

Your contribution:
Parallel to each of the twelve different components described - like reforestation, drinking water supply, reproductive health, improvement of farming practices or adult education -, you are invited to contribute your own experiences in development activities under different social, economic and cultural environments. Please share with us your comments and recommendations, which will complement the described component.

The resulting bundle of ideas will provide a global handbook of good practices. And it will be the basis for the development of standardized training and implementation manuals that could serve as social franchise models for development.
